29 years ago, Anirban Bhattacharyya sat at the green benches at St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta (then) penning down poems in an old red diary. He was a first-year B.A. student engrossed in the universe of Beowulf, Riders to the Sea, and Shakespeare. He even fancied that one day his poems might even get published. He called his unpublished collection ‘Petals’ and wrote the name on the page with multicolored felt pens. And then real life took over. The book was forgotten. But in December 2021, Providence intervened and Anirban’s collection of poems was finally published. The collection is called Mumblings & Musings. And this is where it gets freaky – the name of the publisher is Petals Publishers and Distributors! What Anirban had seeded 29 years ago, manifested itself. The universe conspired to make the book happen, or maybe it was just a coincidence that he had named his book Petals, so many years ago?
The collection comprises 44 modern poems which are accompanied by stunning photographs clicked by Anirban’s childhood friend Ashish Bakshi. They grew up together at Dr. Graham’s Homes, a boarding school in Kalimpong. Anirban adds, ”Aashish and I have remained friends and it’s a great feeling to accomplish this with your classmate after 31 years! Who would have thought in 1990 that both of us would one day get published together?”
“These poems are visceral, gritty, thought-provoking, and pieces of my soul that I am sharing with the readers. Poetry is always very personal – but it is the relatability factor felt by the readers that makes them universal. These poems are simple, modern, easy-to-read pieces, and this book is dedicated to my two gurus at St. Xavier’s – Bertram Da Silva and the late Rohinton Kapadia.” Anirban said.
The book has already received rave reviews from celebrities like actor Sushant Singh (Savdhaan India, Lipstick Under My Burkha) who said, “Each poem invites you back, again and again, to peel the layers and keep getting lost in the labyrinth of emotions”
Kolkata-based actor Jayant Kripalani (Aarya, Taranath Tantrik) has said, “I’ve never understood why people write poetry, but I’m glad Anirban did. Some of his mumblings are amusing and some worth musing about. And Bakshi’s photographs are often illuminating.”
Actress Dipannita Sharma (War, Ladies Vs. Ricky Behl) has said, “These are so meaningful. Tugs at your heart; resonates. Mumblings that truly make sense. Right out of the heart… the intensity is so real.”
This is Anirban’s second book. In 2019 Penguin published his debut true crime book, The Deadly Dozen: India’s Most Notorious Serial Killers which went on to become the No.1 Bestseller on Amazon. The book received amazing endorsements from superstars Ayushmann Khurrana, John Abraham, Ronit Bose Roy, and auteur Anurag Kashyap.
Ayushmann has described Anirban’s debut book as ”One of the most exciting true-crime books I have read in recent years. Highly engaging. The stories grip you by the jugular. Razor-sharp and gripping.’
Writing. true-crime came easy to him, as Anirban Bhattacharyya is the Co-creator, Producer, and Writer of the hit TV show Savdhan India, and also the Producer of Crime Patrol and Fear Files.
When he is not busy writing books (he has three lined up for release in 2022) he acts in movies (Sui Dhaaga, Mission Mangal) or performs standup comedy with his solo show Don’t Mess With The Bong.
“Mainstream publishers stay away from publishing poetry as they say it doesn’t sell… But I found two people who believed in poetry – my lit agent Suhail Mathur of The Book Bakers who assured me he would help get it published and Harpreet Makkar the owner of Petals Publishers who immediately agreed to publish the book! And so I am blessed! And now it’s up to the readers to prove that poetry does sell so that future poets continue to get published!” Anirban concluded by saying, “This book is an emotional homecoming for me – the poems I wrote in this city have now returned 29 years later!”
The book is available worldwide on Amazon.
